Lunch-Walk Fool's Tower "Narrenturm"

(Federal Pathological Anatomical Museum Vienna)

Friday, June 3rd, 2011, 12.45 - 13.45 (in German)
Saturday, June 4th, 2011, 12.45 pm to 01.45pm (in English)

The museum is located in the so-called Fool's Tower. The Fool's Tower was built in 1784 under the Emperor Joseph II. It was the first psychiatric hospital. In 1869 the activity was stopped and the rotunda from then on was used as a nurses' home, for medical service apartments, as the custodian of University clinics and factories.
Since 1971, the Pathological-Anatomical Museum is hosted in the Fool’s Tower. Since 1993, the whole building is used as a museum. The collections of this museum have a long tradition and can look back on two hundred years of history. They served and serve for documentation and research of diseases and thus of humans (and animals) suffering. The museum was originally a place of teaching for medical students, nowadays the collections are partly accessible for the public as well. The transmission of knowledge about diseases - also in terms of a conscious confrontation with the often repressed, but not less real aspect of human life – is a major concern here.

Costs: 6 € / person (including entrance fee and guided tour Narrenturm)
Metting Point: 12.45 entrance Narrenturm

Sunday, June 5th, 2011, 10.00 – 12.00 (in English)

For over 800 years Jewish life in Vienna was marked by periods of "toleration" and periods of expulsion by the respective rulers. This walk takes you to a kind of time journey. You will see parts of the Old City and fell the the centuries of Jewish history in Vienna: from Judenplatz, site of Jewish life in the Middle Ages to the center of the bloody expulsion and extermination of the community in 1420/21, it goes beyond the Seitenstettengasse with the unusual city temple from the Biedermeier period to the Morzinplatz, on which the headquarters of the Gestapo was situated in the Metropol Hotel until 1945. A mostly unnoticed relief in the first floor of the present building reminds you of the terrible events of those years. During the tour you will also hear about the presently re-growing Jewish community, about street festivals and Jewish klezmer music festivals and as a closing you can enjoy a bagel at "Books & Bagels"!
